Slow sales in Scarborough

Retailers in Scarborough are reporting a slow restart to business, and vendors say they don’t expect activity to pick up overnight. From as early as 8am on Tuesday, the second day since the easing of the lockdown restriction on the sector, a steady flow of pedestrian traffic was observed, but few customers were seen purchasing items. An employee at a variety store, who wished to stay anonymous. said she wasn’t surprised by the slow start. “So far, people are coming in but not really buying much. But they are coming in, because it’s the first time the store has been opened in so...

Former CL Financial executive and former People’s National Movement (PNM) treasurer Andre Monteil is being sued by his former landscaper for $300,000 in unpaid maintenance fees for his two properties in Tobago. In his court filings, obtained by Guardian Media, lawyers representing Zimroy Williams are claiming that he was forced to file the lawsuit after Monteil repeatedly broke promises to clear the debt, which stems from work done at his properties in Buccoo and Lowlands between late 2017 and 2019.  According to the documents, Williams claims that in January 2017 he entered into an oral agreement with Monteil to maintain the properties for $20,000...

The lawsuit contends Monteil, the owner of two properties at Buccoo and Tobago Plantations in Lowlands, hired the landscaper to provide garden maintenance and landscaping services on a monthly basis at $20,000 a month. It was allegedly an oral agreement between the two,...

THE Tobago Business Chamber has called on the Government to enact mandatory covid19 vaccine laws to allow certain sectors to reopen. Chamber president Martin George, in a video on Friday, backed the Prime Minister's cautious approach to reopening and prioritising lives over livelihoods, but urged the government "to be more proactive, creative and innovative in finding ways to get us quickly out of this economic crisis." George said the country is paying a heavy price for the lockdown measures to curb the spread of the virus. He noted recent statements from the Supermarket Association of TT president Rajiv Diptee about rising food prices...

As Tobago hotel closes, George says clear vaccination policy needed

As Tobago’s economy continues to feel the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin George, Chairman of the Tobago Business Chamber, believes that Government should look to vaccination as the key to recovery. George was commenting on the temporary closure of award-winning Tobago resort Coco Reef Resort and Spa, which today announced that it couldn’t continue to operate amidst continued uncertainty. Owner John Jefferis said the resort’s reopening will be announced in due course, when...
