BETTER POLICE LEADERSHIP NEEDED

Last Updated on 24.03.2015 Attorney at Law Martin George has called for effective leadership in the Police Service following Monday's 'day of policing' which led to massive traffic gridlocks throughout both islands. Mr. George said while the police action caused "tremendous inconvenience," the officers have issues they have been negotiating for, for some time, but this should not have impacted citizens in the way it did. He said while it may not have necessarily been the best way to approach their problem, the action showed deficiencies in leadership in the Police Service. ATTORNEYS AGREE: ILP MOTION ON CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT BILL PREMATURE

The Constitution Amendment Bill, 2014 continues to draw some mixed reviews and Justice Frank Seepersad's ruling on Monday, in favour of the State against ILP members at the High Court, has opened up new discussions. Speaking on Good Morning T&T on Tuesday, Attorneys Wayne Sturge and Martin George are of the view that the ILP is threatened by changes to the country's Constitution. AMEND LAW FOR DOCTORS TO REPORT QUESTIONABLE MEDICAL MATTERS

Attorney at Law Martin George says amendments need to be made to the law that governs doctor/patient confidentiality. Commenting on the cocaine surgery matter, he said doctors are aware of unlawful offences taking place and they should be mandated to report them. "We might need to look at amending the law to make a requirement, a mandatory legal requirement, for doctors to report because at present, what you have really is basically a moral and ethical responsibility under the terms of the Hippocratic Oath." Meanwhile Medical Practitioner Dr. Rai Ragbir said ignorance of the law is not an excuse. "As a physician, whether it...
