Two accused fail to show, murder hearing postponed

TWO of the three California residents charged with the murder of Chanardaye Bissoon-Dookhan, mother of three, between September 6 and 7, did not appear at the Couva Magistrate's Court on Monday due to transportation problems. The third accused Devon Harrigangan HaHhHh, formerly of Mason Hall, Tobago, but whose last address was Fifth Street, New Settlement, Dow Village, California, was the only one who was transported by the new security arrangements. A MAN who shot two policemen and robbed employees of a travel agency of cash and jewelry more than seven years ago, lost his appeal yesterday and was ordered to start a 24-year sentence right away. Benjamin De Freitas, of Plaisance Road East Dry River, who had been in jail for the past four years awaiting his appeal, was also ordered to receive 20 strokes with the birch. by Curtis WilliamsTHE COURT OF Appeal yesterday reduced from 30 to 20 the number of strokes Benjamin de Freitas would receive with the cat-o’-nine tails.   The court upheld a submission from his attorney Martin George that the trial judge exceeded the statutory limit of strokes that a person could receive.
