Over 2,000 sign online petition to revoke Dr Sawh’s licence

THE African Students Society at UWI, St Augustine has launched an online petition calling for Dr Avinash Sawh’s medical licence to be revoked.

Sawh is being investigated by the Medical Board after a recording of his delivering what has been described as a “racist rant” went viral. He later apologised for it,

His attorney, Martin George, has until December 1 to provide “an explanation” to the board.

The explanation for the Change.org petition says, “The Equal Opportunity Act No 69 of 2000 prohibits the “discrimination of persons on grounds of sex, race, ethnicity, origin, marital status, religion or disability.

“Dr Avinash Sawh’s recently documented behavior reveals a prejudicial bias against African nurses and by extension colonial attitudes towards those of African descent, who make up over a third of our population. Racist beliefs like these cannot facilitate a safe working environment for African healthcare professionals and patients.”

It said the society is calling for “an end to the tolerance of racist behaviours and ideals within the medical field.

“We as a nation must take a firm stance if we want to see change and create a safe country for us all.

“Justice should be executed without bias or delay. We must show zero tolerance towards racism in Medicine. Sign this petition if you agree.”

One supporter commented, “Racism has no place in medicine or anywhere.”

Another said, “I am against racial discrimination. It is evil and quickly spreads like a cancer. How can he be trusted to administer medical care to anyone? He is a disgusting human being and should be made an example (of). Him getting his licence revoked is not punishment enough.”

Up to press time, the petition had gathered over 2,000 signatures.
