Judge puts child-killer on bond

by Francis Joseph

HIGH COURT Judge Richard Crane said yesterday the court has forgiven child-killer Avagale Dookie, but advised her that she still has to seek forgiveness from God.

Justice Crane described Avagale’s case as “shocking” and added that “women don’t do these things in any part of the world.” He continued, “It is disheartening to think that you took this child’s life. For that I will pray for you.”

But he stressed that Avagale was fortunate to have the services of the Probation Department at her disposal.

Justice Crane said he accepted the report of Probation Officer Annette Brice.

Dookie, 24, was put on a $5000 bond and placed on probation for three years. She is to report to the Probation Department once a month in the first year, and as directed in the following two years.

Dookie pleaded guilty on January 25 before Justice Crane in the Port-of-Spain First Assize Court in the unlawful killing of her five-month-old son Akeel at their home at North Oropouche Road, Sangre Grande, on December 21, 1991.

Justice Crane released Avagale on bail pending sentence. Evans Welch appeared for the State, while Martin George represented the accused.

When the case was called yesterday, the judge asked the probation officer to go into the witness box and give a summary of the report she had done on Avagale within the last three weeks.

For 45 tearful minutes before a court comprising relatives and media personnel, Brice told the court of the life which Avagale led, which resulted in the poisoning death of her infant son, and an attempt on the life of her daughter.

The court heard that Dookie found in 1991 that her life was not worth living. She did not spend her early years with her mother, who could not accommodate her since she was married to someone who was not prepared to give Avagale financial support.
