VENDOR MOVES TO HAVE MAYOR JAILED
By Aneela Maraj Saturday 6th August, 1996A Market vendor has filed a High court motion asking that the mayor of Arima, Rose Janniere and Acting Town Clerk of Arima, Michael Woods, be imprisoned for contempt of court.
Market vendor Kayim Ali, through his Attorney Guy Hannays and Company instructing Martin George, filed a motion in the Registry of the Port-of-Spain High Court yesterday.
The motion is claiming that both Mayor Janniere and Woods contravened an order of Justice Annestine Sealey. Justice Sealey granted Ali an injunction on July 28 restraining the Arima Borough Council from demolishing or interfering with Ali’s stall at the Arima Market.
However, according to Ali’s motion, the Borough demolished his stall and damaged his goods on July 23.
As a result the Borough’s motion, Ali is asking a High Court Judge to imprison the duo for contempt of court.
When Newsday contacted Mayor Janniere yesterday she said she had no comment about the situation and “to talk with Mr. Woods.” On attempting to contact Mr. Woods, Newsday was told that he was “very busy and could not be disturbed right now.”
The Arima Market is bounded by Pro Queen Street and De Verteuil Street and provides facilities for vendors to sell their goods.
Similar action was taken by chicken vendor Leonard Baptiste who obtained a restraining order against the Arima Borough Council. The injunction has not yet been breached.
Mayor Janniere and Woods must now be served with notice of motion papers informing them of the committal proceedings which will begin on Monday August 8 before the presiding vacation judge in the High Court in Port of Spain.
