Martin George – Come Leh We Go Tobago!!!
The importance of human resources development in Trinidad and Tobago has been recognized by all. A focused discussion on the sister island of Tobago is accorded priority at our next Tea With HRMATT. It’s time to reflect and commit to taking action when we consider the unique demographic, economic and geographic constraints faced by Tobago as the island’s development call for a strengthening of the concerted efforts at human resources development.
To kick start our discussions on Thursday, we introduce to you our first speaker, Mr. Martin George, Chairman of the Tobago Business Chamber.
Martin George is the Principal of the Law Firm MARTIN GEORGE & CO (MAGCO) with more than a quarter century of Legal Practice experience. The Firm has offices both in Tobago and Trinidad and has a Team of five Attorneys and eight Administrative Professionals. The Firm has practice areas which include -: Civil Litigation, Medical Negligence, Constitutional Law, Judicial Review & Administrative Law, Wills & Probate and Administration of Estates, Conveyances & Real Estate matters and Family Law. The Firm has successfully represented Thousands of clients throughout Trinidad & Tobago and regionally and Internationally also. The Firm has served and continues to serve as Attorneys of Record on the Legal panels of various Financial Instutions and other corporate organizations throughout Trinidad & Tobago.
Mr. George has a strong sense of social service and previously served for three (3) years as a Commissioner on the Law Reform Commission of Trinidad & Tobago. He is the founding Chairman of Crimestoppers Trinidad & Tobago and has been at the forefront of the program which has served the Nation as a valuable tool in crime reduction in Trinidad & Tobago and he is still a Director on the Board of Crimestoppers Trinidad & Tobago. In this capacity Mr. George has attended and represented Trinidad & Tobago at numerous Crimestoppers International Conferences in Singapore, The Hague, New Mexico, South Africa, Bermuda, Australia, Las Vegas, and numerous other countries throughout the Caribbean. He has been appointed as the Legal representative of Crimestoppers for the Caribbean region.
Mr. George is a member of the Trinidad & Tobago Chamber of Commerce having served as Chairman of its Firearms sub-Committee. He also served as a Member of its NOVA Committee and as a Former Chairman of its Crime & Justice Committee and he has served as a Member of its Neighbourhood Watch Committee whereby he along with Dr. Hamid Ghany and Mr. Andrew Johnson – Attorney at Law visited numerous communities throughout Trinidad & Tobago sharing perspectives and discussing crime prevention and crime reduction strategies.
Mr. George was appointed by Prime Minister Hon. Patrick Manning to the Anti-Crime Commission chaired by Mr. Ken Gordon which presented its recommendations and report to the Cabinet. Mr. George was appointed by Prime Minister Hon. Kamla Persad Bissessar to the Tobago Internal Self-Government Commission, chaired by Dr. Hamid Ghany, which held hearings throughout the length and breadth of Trinidad and Tobago to canvass views and which resulted in the production of the most comprehensive Report to date, on the issue of Tobago self-Government.
Mr. George has been for decades one of the most consistent and influential voices speaking out on behalf of Tobago and Tobagonians in particular on various issues affecting Tobagonians and their developmental goals and ideals. He is a former Vice President of the Tobago Lawyers Association and continues to be an active member there. He served on the Board of the Tobago Division of the Chamber of Commerce as its Vice President and he is now Chairman of the TOBAGO BUSINESS CHAMBER, an organization he founded and formed, in order to be an indigenous, Tobago-born-and-bred Business Chamber which now advocates for issues concerning Tobago’s businesspeople and Tobago’s business development.
As part of his commitment to giving back to society, he has funded and established a ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR Scholarship Fund and incentive at his Alma Mater Scarborough RC School in order to motivate and inspire the young scholars of Tobago. He is also an active member and supporter of St. Mary’s College Past Students Association. He has very close ties and affiliation to the St. Joseph RC Church in Scarborough, Tobago and is a regular contributor and donor to their events and activities.
Mr. George served for ten years as a weekly columnist in the Daily and Sunday Guardian newspapers and at times as a Guest Columnist for the Tobago News. He regularly appears as a Guest on radio and TV Talk shows very often sharing views on socio-politico-economic topics and Legal matters and subjects concerning Tobago and Tobago’s development.
Mr. George is one of the longest serving Commissioners of the Police Service Commission having been appointed thereto by different Political Administrations and different Presidents repeatedly from 2010 up until 2020. During this time he served as Chairman of the Police Service Commission’s Appeals Tribunal which hears Appeals from Police Officers throughout the Police Service on matters of Promotion and Discipline. Mr. George, during this time, authored and/or co-authored the majority of written Judgments of the Police Service Commission Appeals Tribunals, which now all serve as useful Legal precedents for that body. Mr. George has conducted Lectures and Training sessions in the Police Service on matters of Disciplinary Tribunals, Prosecution of Matters, Preparation of Legal Briefs and Case Summaries. He also served for years as one of the Attorneys for the Police Service Social & Welfare Association and the Police Service Credit Union. He has also been one of the Attorneys for the Trinidad & Tobago Fire Services Association and also one of the Attorneys for the Trinidad & Tobago Prisons Officers Association.
Mr. George served for years as a Member of the Port of Spain Rotary Club and the San Juan Rotary Club. He also has been a member of the Toastmasters International which helps motivate, train, guide and inspire persons to become confident and accomplished public speakers.
Mr. George is also the Charter founding Member of the Medical Complaints Council & Advisory Board of Trinidad & Tobago, a voluntary non-profit organization designed to highlight and thereby help to reduce instances of Medical Negligence and to raise public and private health-care and medical treatment standards throughout Trinidad & Tobago. He has also served as a Member of the Caribbean Forensics Sciences Association and has travelled regionally delivering Lectures in Jamaica and St. Vincent on Medical Negligence, the Death Penalty and on Medico-Legal issues for public and private Health Care Facilities.
He is also the Founding Director of THIS-ABILITY, a non-profit Organization created to enhance and showcase the abilities of the disabled members of our society by focusing not on the disability, but by showing the world that they have “THIS-ABILITY” and creating a skills-bank of Talents & Abilities for which job opportunities and performing engagements are sourced and sought for the members so that society will focus less on the disability and instead be more amazed and enchanted by “THIS-ABILITY”.
Mr. George is also the Founder and current Chairman of the Tobago Business Chamber.
