BETTER SOLUTIONS TO PRISON OVERCROWDING, SAYS ATTORNEY
The First report of the Special Prisons committee is expected to be tabled in Cabinet on Thursday.
On Monday the report was discussed at the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
On Thursday, Attorney at Law, Martin George says there are better ways to deal with over crowding in the nations prisons.
The attorney was a guest on CTV’s First Up Programme.
Mr. George suggested that there are different ideas in which the judicial system could deal with what he described as “small matters.”
Last week, Professor Ramesh Deosaran expressed shock after he toured the Golden Grove and Maximum Security Prisons (MSP).
Last Monday, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar appointed Deosaran to head “a special committee to investigate and address issues emanating from both prison officers and prisoners themselves”.
The nine-member Special Prisons Committee provided recommendations to Mrs. Persad-Bissessar on Friday.
